How to fill a bottomless raised garden bed?

Hi,

I am planning a beginners DIY project of building a bottomless raised garden bed in the area in the attached pics. The height of the garden bed will be 20cm. I will be making 2 such garden beds. One for flowering plants like roses and hydrangeas. The other raised garden bed mainly for herbs, chillis. I am looking for advice on how best to fill both these bottomless garden beds- one catering to flowering plants and the other for herbs, veggies. Thank you

For bottomless raised garden beds, a simple and effective approach is to layer the soil to suit the type of plants you’re growing. For your flowering plants like roses and hydrangeas, start with a base of coarse material like small rocks or broken bricks for drainage, then add a mix of good-quality garden soil with compost on top to about 20cm. For herbs and veggies, a lighter, well-draining mix works best. Combine garden soil with compost and a little coarse sand or perlite to keep roots healthy.
