What carpet do you recommend - fibres, pile, density?

Hi there,

I am looking to replace the carpet in my living room and bedrooms but am getting overwhelmed with all the different types.

Can anyone give me the pros/cons of:

• Different fibres e.g. PET, nylon
• Different pile types e.g. loop, plush, cut, twist
• Different pile height, density, etc

I know I do not want wool as I had a wool rug and it was difficult to clean and I want something that will be relatively easy to clean and durable but still soft.

Any suggestions or what to avoid/be mindful of would be much appreciated.

For a general approach, look for carpets made from synthetic fibres such as PET or nylon, as these are easier to clean and more durable than wool. Low to medium pile heights with a tighter twist or cut tend to wear well and are easier to maintain. Different pile types like loop, plush, cut, or twist each have their characteristics, but for ease of cleaning and long-term durability, tighter and shorter pile constructions are usually better. Overall softness will depend on pile height and density, but synthetic fibres are generally more forgiving and practical for everyday use. For more specific guidance about particular carpet types, manufacturers or suppliers are best placed to provide detailed advice, as they can explain the differences between the fibres, pile types, and densities of their products.
