How to put up wire for hanging vines?

Hi there,

I would like to put something up to cover the gap between the fence and top of my pergola to have a bit more privacy.

I’m open to ideas, but I noticed from old photos of the property they had wire with vines growing over them (see second photo).

The holes seem to be filled so I’m wondering do I need to do to replicate this, what wire is best, and what vines?

Hi @alexreed092,

You can use a turnbuckle balustrade kit with wire rope to create a strong, tensioned support for your vines. These kits include everything you need to attach the wire securely to your posts and tension it so it stays taut. Once the wire is in place, you can plant climbing or trailing vines at the base and let them grow across the trellis. Good options for most areas include jasmine and mandevilla, which will grow from the ground and quickly cover the wire to provide privacy.

As an alternative to @MitchellMc 's suggestion how about

Jack 120cm x 10m Pro Series Heavy Duty Dog Wire Mesh There are longer distances available as well.

You could use Paslode 15 x 2.0mm 100g Galvanised Staple Nail - 100 Pack to secure it to your posts.

I never know which is best, a straight run of wire or a mesh type deal. One is easier to prune (Straight wire) One I think helps the vines catch. A hard call 🙂
