How to cover rough corners on a kids sandpit?

Hi all, I’ve just finished building a sandpit for my kids and overall I’m happy with how it turned out, but my angle cuts are pretty rough despite my best efforts. The gaps and joins are more obvious than I’d like, especially at the corners.

I’m looking for ideas on how to cover or tidy up the angle cuts to make it look a bit cleaner and more finished.

Any suggestions or examples would be appreciated.

I think it’s worth taking a step back and remembering this is a kids’ sandpit @bigtony386, not a fine piece of joinery. From what I can see, your cuts actually look quite tidy and don’t present any real risk of injury. If you want to make the corners a little softer, you could lightly sand or bevel the sharp edges so they aren’t quite as angular.

For the small gaps at the joints, you could fill them with something like Sikaflex 11FC, but sometimes fillers can make the edges look even more noticeable. Another simple option is to fix short strips of timber, like pine decking offcuts, vertically over the joint areas and screw them down as cover strips. That will tidy up the appearance without fuss. Overall, it looks like you’ve done a solid job, and minor gaps and natural timber movement are completely normal.

Id have to second @MitchellMc's words and say you have done a decent job, I dont see a reason to cover the joints up. Its sleepers and would take skills ++++ and maybe a + to get them perfect. Apart from sanding the edges to get rid of potential splinters Id leave it for a few months as the timber will stretch/swell and move.

You could use an electric plane to take off the 90 edge but I would still let it weather in to see if it looks ok 🙂

Hi @bigtony386,

Same as the other lads now would be time (not knowing your tool setup) to add a 1/3 sheet sander (skin) to your collection.

Run the sander over everything inside & outside including the rounding off thing along all the sleepers tops inside & outside
