How many sprinklers to water lawn?

Hey Guys,

I’m looking to irrigate my lawn and am not sure how many sprinklers, zones, etc I’ll need… I’ve included a layout plan below. To explain, there’s a retained upper level (top of the drawing) and lower level with a small lawn area and then on the left of the drawing, a sloped area to the top (as well as stairs in the middle as pictured)… The lines in the middle indicate the retaining wall, stairs, etc…

The previous owners have already run water to the top level but never finished the project… So I have a 25mm pipe running from the tap that comes out where the X by the stairs is… My flow rate for the tap is 20.6 litres per minute…

Would love anyone’s two cents…

I've edited your image to get you started, but I'd encourage you to head to the Pope website and read through this guide on How to install an irrigation system to better understand the process.

You'll need two zones, and I've indicated them with the yellow and orange irrigation lines. The green circles indicate 1/4 spray pop-ups, the reds 1/2 and the blue full. That should give you reasonable coverage without many dry spots, though the exact placement of the pop-ups will need to be determined. They have a radius of 3.5m.

Thanks for the speedy reply @MitchellMc ! So you don’t think the pressure is enough to run all of the sprinklers on the same zone? Just a heads up, I think I mentioned but the top area is retained and around 1m higher… Which sprinklers are you thinking will cover the bits on the top level either side of the stairs?

Hello @MadDawg

If you are looking for variable spray control, I suggest using the Pope 50mm Precision Spray Pop Up Sprinkler With Variable Arc Nozzle. Its arc can be adjusted from 0 to 360 degrees, and its throw distance can be reduced from four to two meters. This will give you full control of where the water goes and how far it goes.

It's unlikely that a single outlet would have enough flow or pressure to run 12 pop-up sprinklers @MadDawg. Even six is pushing it.

With a radius of 3.5m, it appears that the lower half sprinkles and the middle full-circle would overlap, covering the stair area. If the retaining wall blocks the throw from the half-circle on the lower portion, you might end up with a dry portion at the top of the retaining wall where the full-circles in the middle of the lawn can't reach. If that is the case you would neeed to add an additional line there and more sprinklers.
