How to remove Caroma toilet flush mechanism?

Hi there, This toilet is over 36 years old. I want to know how to remove the flush mechanism out of the toilet cistern so that I can replace the seating washer right at bottom of the tank as shown on the image "this washer". I am not able to find the name of this unit, I think it could be Caroma. Can you please help me.

I'm sorry but I am not familiar with this type of fitting. Generally speaking, the flushing mechanism is attached using a large fixing nut at the bottom on the outside of the cistern. I don't see that present in this cistern assembly. In this particular instance, I suggest engaging the services of a registered plumber as they will be able to take this cistern apart. Once dis-assembled you should be able to find a compatible washer that might fit your flushing mechanism.

However, should the flushing mechanism be too old, I suggest having a look at the Kinetic 17 - 25mm Single Flush Outlet Valve as a possible replacement for the flusher. Please note that your plumber will decide if this particular product will work with your cistern. My only other suggestion is to consider replacing your toilet suite with a new one.

Would it be possible for you take a photo of the bottom of the cistern? This will give our members a better idea of how the flush pipe is attached to the cistern. It will also possibly show us how the flushing unit is fixed in place.

Hi @bun2, thanks for the extra detail and for confirming it’s a Doulton Pedigree cistern, that helps narrow things down.

On this style of older cistern, the seating washer sits right down at the base and the vertical flush pipe above it is what needs to come out first. In most cases, that upright pipe simply lifts straight up out of the washer. If it feels locked in and won’t lift freely, try giving it a gentle quarter-turn clockwise, then pull it upward. Over time, mineral buildup can make them feel quite stubborn, so a bit of careful wiggling while lifting can help.

Have a close look around the pipe as well, particularly to the right where it aligns with the rest of the flush mechanism. Some versions are lightly clipped or linked to the guide frame, and that connection needs to be released before the pipe will come free. From the photos, it doesn’t appear to have an external locking nut or frame holding it down, which is typical of these older units.

Once that vertical pipe is removed, the seating washer should be accessible and can be lifted out for replacement. Take the old washer with you when sourcing a new one, as sizes and profiles varied quite a bit with these older cisterns.

If anything feels like it’s forcing or at risk of cracking the cistern, it’s best to stop and reassess, as the plastic can be brittle at that age.
