How can I fill this gap in my fence?

My fence on one side doesn't completely meet the garden wall in the one corner and it's a bit of an eyesore. The fence is asbestos so I can't nail anything to it and it's a bit pricy to replace at this point in time. The garden wall is brick. Is there any way that I can fill this gap in an aesthetically pleasing manner?

I propose using 90 x 22mm Decking H3 Treated Pine - 2.4m and joining them side by side with the offcuts of the same panel. These are treated pine panels and can be used outdoors. I then suggest anchoring the panels to the brick wall using Ramset 8 x 50mm Universal Anchor - 4 Pack. In order to blend in, the panels can be painted to the same colour as the brick wall.

I am thinking about something that is lightweight, non-intrusive and requires a minimal amount of time to install - corrugated poly roofing sheet.

Cut off a section to fill the gap and secure to the post with building adhesive.

Don't forget safety and the protective clothing thing.

Just a quick safety reminder for anyone reading along @SunnyZim87, as this fence contains asbestos sheeting, it is really important that it is not cut, drilled, sanded, nailed into or otherwise disturbed. Asbestos products can be safe when left intact, but any work that damages the material can release hazardous fibres. If repairs or alterations to the asbestos fence itself are ever required, this should only be carried out by a suitably licensed professional in line with local regulations.

@AlanM52 has the perfect solution. If you fix one edge along the corner of that brickwork, then there will be enough back-flex to hold it firmly in place at the fence. This is obviously after ripping the sheet down by at least half.

Thanks! How does one cut the polyroofing and is it translucent or will it block the view completely? Which building adhesive would you recommend?

Hi @SunnyZim87,

You can cut poly roofing relatively easily with some aviation snips.

It comes in a variety of finishes, including clear, which can be seen through. There are also options that are less opaque, such as grey or bronze, or options that are solid in colour, such as solar ice.

For the adhesive, I would suggest using Sikaflex 11FC Purform , which is an extremely strong and flexible exterior grade adhesive and sealant.

If you just want to cover the gap I was thinking about a tall piece of H3 timber around 75 by 35mm or even doubled up (two pieces back to back) and using masonary anchors bolt them to the brickwork to cover the gap. That way nothing is disturbed, plus you get to use that "post" if needed for adding anything across without touch that old sheet.

Thanks! Would it hold in place if only anchored to the brick wall? Also, if down the line, I decide to have the asbestos fence removed and replaced, will the polyroofing be easy enough to remove as well without damaging the brick wall if I've used adhesive?

The bolted section of timber to the wall is only one fixing point, I am avoiding touching the asbestos at all.

It would be worthwhile finding out how much the fence would cost to remove and replace as disturbing the fence isnt something I would like to do.

I was thinking of the timber "covering" that unsightly gap. Are you after something that covers the whole fence?

If thats the case I would go down the track of installing a new fence in front while sorceing disposal of the old sheets.

Hi @SunnyZim87,

The adhesive could be a bit frustrating to get off, but it shouldn't damage the bricks.

It should stay in place if it is just anchored to the brick, as the width of the gap is relatively small. You could always add a bit of adhesive and stick the outer edge to the fence as a last resort, though. As long as you are not breaking up the asbestos, which you wouldn't be with adhesive, then the risk of releasing asbestos fibres into the air is low.

In saying this, I would still be looking at the cost to have it removed and replaced as that is ultimately the best thing you can do long term.
