How to replace skylight dome?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can shed a light on where I can get the dome for my house's skylight. Also is it okay to just replace the dome or I am supposed to change the whole kit?

This is doing my head in as whenever it's raining it would leak through the skylight.

For skylights, the key thing to know is that the dome itself is often replaceable without needing to change the entire skylight kit, but it depends on the type and age of your skylight and where the leak is coming from. The tricky part is ensuring the replacement dome matches the dimensions and the type of flashing used, otherwise you risk leaks or a poor fit.

Building codes and manufacturer instructions are designed to ensure the skylight is weatherproof and safe. Some newer skylights may require the full kit to be replaced if a dome isn’t sold separately, particularly if the flashing or frame has deteriorated. So it’s a balance: if your existing frame is in good condition, you might only need the dome; if there’s any doubt about sealing or structural integrity, replacing the whole unit is safer.

Unfortunately, there’s a bit of trial and error involved, especially if the skylight is older or the manufacturer no longer supplies parts. Measuring the dome carefully and checking for the brand or model are usually the most reliable ways to find a matching replacement. However, I think your end solution will be to buy something like this EzyLite 300mm Round Skylight Kit with Universal Tray and check to see whether the exterior dome from it suits your current flashing. If not, you might just be able to use the flashing and dome from the kit and connect it to the current ducting and inside skylight. Failing that, you'd look at replacing the whole unit.
