How to install LED strip lighting under bathroom vanity?

Hi,
I'm in the middle of planning a bathroom reno. I want to install wall hung vanities in the powder room and ensuite. I think it would look great to have LED strip lighting underneath them, similar to this:

As I have a lot of smart home stuff, I plan to set them up so they turn on when someone opens the door.
I've done lots of googling but can't find information on where exactly they are positioned- do they just run along the underneath of the front edge of the vanity unit, or should I run them along the sides as well?

A couple of additional questions:

- should I also use a LED channel diffuser?

- are there any considerations if I were to simply get the sparky to install a powerpoint underneath the vanity, and plug them in, rather than go for a hard wired option? 

- reading the bathroom lighting regs, I don't think these need to be IP rated as they are not  (although I'll probably use IP44 to be safe). Does this sound correct?

In regards to positioning, I suggest doing a bit of light position testing so that you can get the best optimal illumination in the room. I would recommend speaking to your sparky about the best place to have the power point. I propose having it installed inside the cabinet so that it is not exposed to moisture or accidental splashing from water when cleaning the floor. Adding a diffuser is like an extra layer of protection for the LED light from exposure, I would recommend putting one on. 

In regards to automation, I suggest looking at using the Arlec Grid Connect Smart Home Motion Sensor (please make sure that it is compatible with your smart LED light). The motion detector will save from having to install lengthy wires and switches as it can simply send a signal to your smart LED light to turn on when detecting motion. It is always best practice to go for the best IP rating for lights used in a high moisture area. The IP44 would be the minimum I would suggest, but I recommend looking for IP65 if possible.
