How to add a lattice screen to carport?

Just to clarify, when you say the gap between the posts is 3m x 2.4m, which one is the height and which is the width?

These Jack Matrix 2410 x 1205 x 5mm Off White Plastic Reeded Diamond Lattice are the closest I could find in terms of colour and description. Due to the size of the opening, you would need a few, and we would need to ensure they are installed in a way that they are supported on all sides.

These Matrix 2425 x 1220 x 28mm C-Channel Frame Kits are typically used, alongside posts or additional framing, to support the screens.

The height and width of the openings will decide the best method of installation, whether it is posts or additional framing. When you can advise, I can certainly assist further.

the width between the posts is 3000, that is middle to middle of each post.

the height would be no more than 2400 but can be flexible depending on the measurements of material.

Hi @Garrygaz,

I can't see the drawing that you've attached, but I certainly understand the dimensions better now.

With the height being 2400mm, that works better with the size of the lattice, as it could sit vertically. Assuming both openings are 3000mm wide, you would end up using 5 panels, relatively evenly spaced.

The main issue I am seeing is that the posts that are available are all black, so you may need to either paint them to suit the colour of your lattice and C-channel, or use a different material such as this 70 x 35mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine and paint it to match.

hopefully you can see the image I have downloaded. This is what I believe could work, however I have a couple of questions.

1. Due to width the 5x lattice sheets will be overall 15mm longer or 7.5mm each end this shouldn’t cause any issues would it?

2. Would I still need the channel framing kits?

3. What screws should I use to fix the lattice to the framework and the 70 x 35 to the existing posts.

Thank you for the sketch; it is very helpful and looks like a solid start on the plan. I would consider making a couple of changes, though.

As the rails are elevated, they would need to span 3m between fixing points. A 70x35 would likely sag over this distance, so I would consider using 90 x 45mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine instead.

The slight size difference wouldn't be an issue; you can cut them using a circular saw if needs be.

You would still need to use the channel framing kits because they allow the lattice panels to be held in place, while still allowing for expansion within the channels. If you were to simply screw them to the timber, there's a good chance they would warp because they can't expand. You can see how they work in the videos on the product page.

With this being said, as the channel framing needs to be screwed to something on all sides, you would need to add one more upright to your frame to accommodate it.

You can use 100mm batten screws to screw the frame together and attach it to the posts. You can then screw through the channel kits to the frame, ensuring the screws do not hinder the lattice's ability to expand and contract as per the instructions, using a 50mm screw. These Bremick Vortex Plus Roofing Screws 6.2 x 50mm would be a good option that would match the C-channel kit in terms of colour.

Hi @Garrygaz,

Yes, that is correct, sorry I should have been clearer. You would end up needing 4 x 3m lengths of timber and 4 x 2.4m lengths of timber.

You could use the two outside posts as anchor points, but due to the 1220mm width of the lattice, the centre post could not be used, so you would need to add an extra upright on either side of the central post and adjust the other uprights accordingly.

I've just realised that this would also mean the top and bottom rails would need to attach to the inside of the posts; they could not be face fixed if you want everything to line up. So, you could either use angle brackets or joist hangers to attach the rails to the posts, or attach an additional piece of timber to the front face of the posts so that the frames could be attached in line with the rest of the frame.
