How to paint retaining wall next to pool?

Hi, I was just hoping to confirm what might be best to use for this wall in our pool area / below our fence.

Old paint is coming off as can be seen in the photos. Not sure what the previous owners used. I’m planning on pressure washing / sanding the old paint off and repainting a similar cover.

There are some patches in the wall where weeds are coming through at the base connected to the tiles and along the wall itself.

Was just hoping for recommendations for paint and filling the gaps?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wall next to the pool.

It appears that a thin set render was used on the wall and not paint. Whoever did the render did not seal the surface and mould has grown into its surface. It could be age or water ingress that is causing the render to peel off after all this time. You could patch the broken section with new render, but it would stand out and not blend in with the old render. The wall would then need to be painted in order to get a uniform look.

The repair options are either to remove all of the old render with a cold chisel and re-render the wall. Clean and patch the wall then paint over it in order to give it a uniform finish. To kill the weeds in between, I suggest using a non-selective herbicide and spray those sections then remove the dead weeds. Once you've chosen a repair option please let us know and I will add more recommendations on what needs to be done.

😕 I think you will have some work ahead. As @EricL has said it does look like a thin render over the wall more so than paint. Paint would be a messy clean up (and yeah I did my bessa blck wall next to my pool and had paint flakes evereywhere) but with yours its will be a different route to take.

Cold chisel and a couple of thick blade painscrapers would be what I would reach for with a mallet to use on them. Slowly chsieling/lifting the old render.

It will take time (my removal of the paint to a week plus all up. Besser block painting makeover in case you want to see.

Once its clean then you can redo the render (it needs to go first otherwise it will not bond well) I would go with a thicker coating and a neautral colour that will stand the test of time 🙂 Prepping the rea first as @EricL has mentioned would be a wise move.

Should’ve known it wouldn’t be as easy as I was hoping! Thanks so much for that. I’ll have to get cracking on that job shortly, will definitely do a thicker render over it.
