How to paint metal doorframes black?

Hello! I am wanting to refresh my doorframes and paint them black. They are currently a dark brown, and have a few scratches and dings in the paint. What is the best way to prep the doors, and which products would you recommend using for a quality, long lasting black finish? Thanks!

To get a durable, high-quality black finish on your metal doorframes, start by preparing the surface properly. Lightly scuff the entire frame with 240-grit sandpaper to give the paint something to grip. Focus extra attention on any scratches or dings, sanding them smooth. In most cases, the dings are just in the old paint, but if the metal itself is indented, you can fill the low spots with a suitable filler such as builder’s bog and sand it smooth once it’s dry.

Once the surface is smooth and clean, apply a coat of a metal-appropriate undercoat, such as Dulux Precision Undercoat. This will help the topcoat adhere and improve the durability of the finish. After the undercoat is fully dry, you can paint the frames with Dulux Aquanamel in black. This water-based enamel gives a hard-wearing, long-lasting finish that resists chipping and can be used indoors or outdoors. Apply in even, thin coats, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next, and you’ll end up with a smooth, professional-looking black finish.
