How much overhang possible for laundry benchtop?

After some advice on a laundry reno. Plan is to have 450mm wide floor cupboard with a door on the right hand side (shaded blue). We would like to have a bench top that goes all the way to the sink 1000mm span. Bench top will be fixed to the back wall (timber attached to the studs and bench fixed to the timber.) Will that be too much of an overhang if we do not have a leg supporting the front left corner. If not what thickness bench top should we use.

If you use a 450mm wide cabinet, the span between that cabinet and the sink would be 550mm. Unfortunately, this would be far too much of an overhang regardless of the support on the back wall.

The typical solution in this situation is to install an end panel like this Kaboodle Gloss White Base End Panel against the side of the sink.

You would fix it to the floor using angle brackets and then set the benchtop on top of it and fix it in place with angle brackets.

Along with the cleat attached to the wall, this would ensure the benchtop is supported on 3 out of 4 sides, which should be strong enough. If you feel it isn't, you can always add a strip of particleboard or a piece of angle to help support that front edge.

Using a thicker panel, such as a 33mm benchtop panel, would also ensure it is strong and capable of supporting anything placed on top.
