How to replace older sink?

Question

We are planning to install a dishwasher in our kitchen but will need to replace an old radiant brand double basin sink with a new one and one half basin one so that we can fit the dishwasher under it. The existing sink is 1250mm by 48mm in a stone benchtop. So we need an exact replacement.

Any suggestions as to how to do this as the benchtop cannot be recut.

Hi Austin (@aussietay),

You've got an inset sink, which makes things a little bit easier on us because any of these Double Bowl Kitchen Sinks that match up in size should simply dropp into place and by the looks of it, there are quite a few that are pretty close.

You might have already done this, but can you open up the cabinet and get a nice accurate measurement of the cutout for us? The spec sheets for each sink show the required cutout, so once we can be really sure the measurements are accurate, we'd just double check the spec sheets to see if they match.

Now, the next question is, on which side would the dishwasher be and how much space do you need for it?

You can get left or right-handed sinks, so if the dishwasher sits entirely underneath the strainer, then you may not need to use a 1 and 1/2 or 1 and 3/4 sink.

This Mondella Cadenza 1180mm Left Hand Double Bowl Sink or this Mondella Cadenza 1180mm Right Hand Double Bowl Sink will work with a cutout that is 1160x440mm, so it would likely go very close.

Hi there JacobZ,

Of course you’re right the sink width is 480mm. I estimate the cutout to be approximately 1190x 420. I think the previous owners did the kitchen renovation and kept the original sink which you can see has two tap holes covered up in it. Because of costs etc. it’s not possible to change the sink cutout ( we just cannot afford it) l would say it’s top mounted.

Unfortunately, it can be tricky to match new sinks to existing holes, but I can certainly have a look if you can provide a few further details.

You've mentioned that the sink is 1250mm by 48mm. Did you possibly mean 480mm?

Also, we would need to see how the sink is currently mounted. Is it top mounted, undermount or flush mount? Really, we need to know the size of the cutout more than the size of the sink itself.

If you can provide some photos, and the dimensions of the actual cutout, then we could certainly have a look at what options might work.

The alternative, if we can't find a sink to match the cutout, assuming it is possible with the physical constraints of your benchtop, is to get a larger sink and enlarge the cutout, or replace the benchtop along with the sink.
