Hi, looking for suggestions on what to add in the space above cabinets? Height of space is 1m
Hi @Dafydd92,
Based purely on the fact the space is up so high, then I'm not so sure you could put something practical like additional wall hung cabinets, but you would have to assess this and decide whether it is something you could use.
Outside of practicality, beautifying the wall with some artwork or canvas prints could be an option.
Alternatively, you could add some wall lighting, although you would need the assistance of an electrician for this sort of thing.

Good Evening @Dafydd92
Mmmm Im not a huge fan of above cabinet storage, mostly because you store it, and its gone until you move out :) Id rather use it activly. Being the kitchen is the second problem as oil does build up on unused surfaces over time.
How about a mixture of open spaces. One section for vases that get used irregulary. One section for mix masters, croc pots, blenders. Big bulking items. This comes in hand with a set of stools (Ikea have a very nice timber one you put together, I have several and they keep on going plus are light) So when I cook I just grab the steps, get thge mixer down (I have a large plastic bag over it) and away I go. Its not super tidy but is very functional.
A second idea would be thin timber slats hung vertically.

Hello @Dafydd92
I agree with @Dave-1's suggestion of an open shelf. By having it open, it will remind you of what is up there and what you can use. Whereas if it is covered you will forget and the item up top will eventually not get used. I've placed a sample image below rendered using AI to give you an idea of what the shelf could look like.

@Dafydd92 We had the exact same style cabinets in our last place and ended up ripping them out during the renovation. The ceilings were really high like yours, so rather than leaving that dead space above we went with full height overhead cupboards to take it right up. Even with the massive cupboards we put in, they hide a huge amount of stuff and we still struggle to actually fill them all.
Once the cabinetry was in, there was only a small gap left at the top, so we just finished it neatly with a cornice. It made the whole kitchen feel built in and intentional instead of having that awkward space above that just collects dust and grease. If you ever do renovate down the track, going taller with the cabinetry is honestly one of the best ways to use that vertical space properly and keep everything looking clean.
If a full renovation isn’t on the cards, a couple of other options that still look intentional rather than like an afterthought would be a continuous floating shelf across the top for nicer bowls, baskets or occasional-use appliances, or even running some vertical timber slats or panelling above the cupboards to turn it into a feature wall. I’d personally avoid random décor pieces up there though. Kitchens get greasy over time and anything purely decorative tends to just collect dust unless it’s something you’re actually using.
