How to clean bird droppings from a Colorbond roof?

Hi there, I’m after some advice on cleaning the remaining residue from bird droppings. I’m unsure whether this is mildew or lichen. I’ve already pressure-washed the solid waste, but this staining isn’t coming off. As it’s a Colourbond roof, I’m mindful of using only products that are safe and won’t cause damage.

Thank you for sharing your question about your Colorbond roof. I propose using dishwashing liquid and very warm water on the surface. Let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes so that it softens it up and then agitate the surface with an Oates Compact Deck Scrub Brush. This would be the safest cleaning item you can use that will not adversely affect the Colorbond roofing.

Due to the acidic nature of bird poo, it's possible that it might have damaged the surface of the Colorbond roof. In this instance it will be necessary to repair the damage on the surface of the roof as no amount of cleaning will restore the finish.

According to the Colorbond cleaning and maintenance guide, the only recommended cleaning method is exactly what you’ve already tried: a mild detergent mixed with water and a soft bristle brush, followed by a thorough rinse. They don’t recommend any stronger or specialised cleaning agents, as harsher chemicals can damage the paint finish or reduce the lifespan of the coating.

Because of that, there isn’t another off-the-shelf product I’m aware of that would be both more effective and guaranteed to be safe for Colorbond. If the staining or marks aren’t responding to mild detergent, it may be best to engage a professional roof cleaning service. They’ll have experience dealing with stubborn buildup on Colorbond and know what methods can be used safely without risking damage to the surface.

Areas not regularly washed by rainwater should be hosed down at least every six months and more frequently in coastal areas where marine salt spray is prevalent, and in areas where high levels of industrial fallout occur.

In cases where the regular maintenance referred to above does not remove all dirt which may have adhered to the surface of the paint, the following procedure should be carried out:

Wash the surface with a mild solution of pure soap or mild non-abrasive kitchen detergent in warm water.
Application should be with a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush, and should be gentle to prevent shiny spots.
The COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water immediately after cleaning to remove traces of detergent.

Never use abrasive or solvent type cleaners (turps, petrol,kerosene, paint thinners) on COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel.
