How to attach artificial hedge to steel frame?

Question

Have a patio with a steel frame 90HDG and wish to cover with a series of 50x50 Pittosporum artificial hedge pieces. Wish to know what type of drill bit and securing screws to use. Previously attached with Velcro however the Velcro doesnt stick to the pieces securely.

It appears that the steel is much tougher than the TEK screws bit, it will be necessary to drill pilot holes for the screws. I suggest using Kango or Full Boar brand drill bits coated in titanium to drill pilot holes in the steel.

Please make sure to check the settings on your drill and that it is set for drilling and not for hammer function. If you wish to get a trades person, I suggest posting the job on either Hipages or Airtasker

Hi Eric,

Finally got round to trying to attach the hedge to the hdg supports but had no success, the TEK screw hardly made an impression. I had a further look at the plans and found it’s says 90 SHS-HDG, I don’t think this makes a difference. Any ideas on where I am going wrong or could you recommend someone to assist or just do the job.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your artificial hedge.

If you are mounting to 90 HDG, I propose looking at Buildex 10G x 25mm Class 4 Cladding & Fencing TEKS® Screws with Seal or similar. My best advice is to use a Trojan 3mm Centre Punch to prevent the screw head from drifting. By marking the steel surface, the screw tip will stay steady, and it will be easier to drill into the steel.

Would it be possible for you to post a picture of your patio frame? This will give our members a better idea of its configuration, we can then offer more recommendations in regards to mounting options.
