How to sand and stain timber desktop?

It's got a bit of a rougher finish so I was wondering what the best sandpaper is to use to smooth it out, as well as any recommendations for an oil to put on it?

Thank you for sharing your question about your timber desktop. For a smoother finish, I suggest finishing the surface off with a 240grit sandpaper in combination with an electric sander or a sanding block to make sure you have a uniform surface. A handy technique you can use is to rub the surface with a clean piece of A4 piece of paper after you've finished sanding. This will smooth out the surface even further and push down any splinters that may be sticking out on the surface. Rub the surface in a uniform direction and once you've finished you can feel how smooth the surface is.

As for the oil, I propose looking at the Cabot's 500ml Clear Danish Oil. It's one of my favourites as it produces a beautiful natural finish. Please test a small section of your benchtop underneath to make sure that you are satisfied with the finish. If you are happy with the results, you can then commit the entire desktop.
