How to rejuvenate Merbau external timber door and window frames?

Hi Bunnings Community!

We have some (external facing) Merbau stained timber door and window frames. Its still in pretty good condition, might say its a bit dry /lack luster if anything.

Any products you'd recommend to just give it a coat? Ideally not a glossy finish?

It was intitially stained in Intergrain Merbau NaturalStain Timber Stain.

That Intergrain Merbau NaturalStain you originally used is actually designed to be re-applied as it fades, so one easy option is simply to refresh it with the same product. Before recommending alternatives, it’s worth asking if you were happy with how the Intergrain finish looked originally? And if so, is there any particular reason you’re considering switching to something different? Using a different brand or system can sometimes lead to compatibility issues with the existing stain, whereas topping up with the same product usually performs well on the same timber without adhesion problems.

We have previously reapplied the Merbau NaturalStain previously, and its somewhat darkened the timber… as to be expected with more stain I suppose. Family is happy with how the intergrain finish looked originally. Happy to use an intergrain product - but wondering if there is something that isn't in effect adding more stain (and color) to the frames.

Would the intergrain natural stain clearcoat be appropriate? Is it a glossy type finish?

Part of me wonders if there is just an timber oil that is suitable for exterior use that might be less heavy?

The Intergrain UltraClear Exterior, is a clear, water-based timber finish designed to be over-coated onto stained timber, including Intergrain NaturalStain, to provide a protective, transparent layer in gloss, satin, or matt sheens. This clear finish is fully compatible with Intergrain stain systems and won’t yellow, and it adds UV protection and weather resistance when applied correctly to exterior timber though it’s generally recommended for doors, trims and window frames rather than heavy foot-traffic surfaces like decks.

Intergrain UltraClear Exterior is available in matt, satin, and gloss options and can be applied over your Merbau-stained timber once the stain has dried.

As Mitchell has mentioned, compatibility is the issue with using another product on the surface of the Integrain product. Should you decide to use something else, it would be best to sand off the Integrain stain. You can then sand the frame back to wood before you apply the new product you've chosen.
