How to repair ceiling tiles?

Hello! got some ceiling tiles that have been chipped over the years, replacing them will be expensive, wondering if a bit of filler might be the answer or if gravity will be my arch nemesis… it doesn't need to be perfect, just a bit better than it is…

Since these are older internal false ceiling tiles, the first thing to consider is the age of the property. In homes built or renovated prior to 1995, various ceiling and panel products contained asbestos. Many older ceiling tiles, especially 600 x 600mm suspended ceiling panels or fibre cement-style sheets, can contain asbestos.

Before sanding, drilling, scraping or cutting into them, it’s very important to have them checked. Until confirmed otherwise, they should be treated as though they may contain asbestos. Disturbing asbestos-containing material can release fibres into the air, which is a serious health risk. You can arrange testing through a licensed asbestos assessor or testing service. If there is any doubt, avoid disturbing them at all.

If the tiles are confirmed not to contain asbestos, then yes, using a standard plasterboard filler can work well for small chips and damaged corners. It’s best to work in multiple layers rather than trying to fill the damage in one go. Apply filler around the edges of the damage, allow it to dry completely, then lightly sand and repeat as needed to gradually build the area back up and fill in the voids. Once smooth, you can spot prime and repaint to blend it in.

Regardless of whether asbestos is present, you should always wear appropriate PPE when doing this kind of overhead repair work. That includes a properly fitted P2 respirator mask, safety glasses, disposable gloves and long sleeves to protect your skin from dust and falling debris. It’s also a good idea to lay drop sheets below and ensure the area is well ventilated.
