My Big Red lilly pillies are looking a little bare in the middle. What would be the best way to resolve this? Would i need to prune most of the new growth back? Or should I wait till spring to prune?
Hi @fotini15 ,
For your lilly pillies, the best approach is to prune them to just below the top of the fence (or about 20 cm lower), removing the new growth that’s pushing upwards. This type of pruning encourages the plant to fill out lower down, helping to thicken the middle and improve overall coverage.
The most suitable time to do this is late winter to early spring, just before the main growth season starts. This timing lets the plant recover quickly and take advantage of the warmer months to produce healthy new shoots. Be sure to use clean, sharp pruning tools and make cuts just above a healthy leaf node or lateral branch for the best regrowth.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
