How can I make my tiny backyard a happy place to relax?

HelloHello, my name is Margi I'm 84 years old and I live in a retirement village, I have a backyard which is small,3.6 m, / 3.4 m, I need to conceal the ugly pavers with artificial grass with a low pile? So I don't trip!

The ugly fences need screening. I'm thinking bamboo or some sort of greenery and maybe wooden slats for the gate. Are you able to give me some advice?Please? Can Bunnings supply me with these sort of products. I have my eye on one of their outdoor sofas . IIook forward to getting your help.Best regards Margi Butcher

It’s lovely that you’re looking to turn your little backyard into a relaxing space. Even with a small area, you can create a very comfortable and cheerful spot to sit and enjoy some fresh air.

To cover the pavers, artificial grass is a great idea as it can soften the space and help reduce trip hazards. Many artificial turf mats have a shorter pile and can simply be rolled out over a hard surface. For example, a product like the DIY Turf 1.8m x 12mm Pile Synthetic Total Turf - Lineal Metre is designed for small outdoor areas and can be trimmed to size if needed. Low-pile synthetic turf is popular because it has a natural look and is easy to keep clean.

For hiding the fences, bamboo or natural screening is a lovely solution and will instantly make the space feel more like a garden. Lattice can also be attached to existing fencing to soften the look and add privacy, whilst allowing you to grow some climbing plants.

For the gate, a Merbau screening panel would be an excellent choice and can be screwed directly to the gate frame.

An outdoor sofa, such as the Mimosa Savannah Wicker 3 Seater Sofa, would make an excellent addition and really tie the new look together.

Wow!! I love it.i need to add my new70cm round table and the two chairs. Some of my friends ask is there an alternative to the grass?or is it OK. I like it. They are thinking of me tripping i reckon

Provided the grass is installed correctly, and the required adhesive is used to attach it to the pavers, then it poses very little, if any, tripping hazard @Margi Butcher.

They are likely envisaging grass they've seen in the past that has not been installed correctly. If it is not attached to the substrate via either soil pins or adhesive, then it can bunch up over time, and that would be their concern. This is pretty common to see as people just want to use it as a quick fix and roll it out without fixing it down.

What about deck tiles? Now those would look fantastic, and you could even do a combination.

This might be the answer. Isit possible to superimpose the deck tiles on your fantastic idea instead of artificial grass so I can get a better idea of what it would like

Hello Eric and thanks for showing me how the decking tiles look. I'm guessing that they can be put directly on top of the bricks. Am I right? I think they look good.
