How to revive patchy grass?

Hi,

I have a small yard with a L shaped patch of grass that is just roots and patchy.
I do have two small children and a dog that has contributed to the destruction I’m sure.

can someone please tell if it’s possible to revive the grass and make it lush? Is this possible? How could I do it?

It’s absolutely possible to bring this lawn back, so don’t feel discouraged. What you’re seeing is very common in small backyards with kids and a dog. High foot traffic and play tend to compact the soil, and once the soil gets hard the grass roots struggle to grow deeper. When roots stay shallow, the lawn thins out and turns patchy like this.

From the photos, the soil does look compacted and worn rather than completely dead, which is actually good news. The first step I’d recommend is aeration. This simply means creating small holes throughout the lawn to relieve compaction and allow air, water and nutrients to reach the roots. You can hire a lawn aerator, use a manual spike aerator, or even a garden fork if the area is small. Push it in about 8 to 10 cm deep and repeat across the whole lawn.

After aerating, top up the surface with a quality lawn top dressing mix, usually a sandy loam blend. Spread a thin layer, around 10 to 15 mm, and brush it in so it fills the holes and evens out low spots. This improves drainage and gives new seed a better environment to establish.

Then you can overseed. Choose a hardy grass variety suited to your climate and wear level. For high traffic and pets, something like Kikuyu, Couch or a durable rye blend works well in many Australian areas. Keep the seed consistently moist during germination, which usually means light watering once or twice daily for the first couple of weeks. After that, reduce watering but water more deeply and less often to encourage strong root growth.

Now, if you’d prefer a faster result, rolled turf is definitely an option. The big advantage is instant transformation. You lay it and the yard looks green straight away, which is great if you don’t want to wait weeks for seed to establish. It also tends to establish more evenly. The downsides are cost and preparation. You still need to fix the compaction first, otherwise the new turf will struggle just like the old lawn. Turf also needs careful watering for the first few weeks to root in properly.

A few helpful tips going forward. Try to rotate play areas if you can, especially under swings or near pathways where wear is concentrated. Consider adding a small mulch or soft fall area under play equipment to take pressure off the grass. For your dog, rinsing urine spots with water can help reduce burn patches. And once the lawn is healthy again, avoid mowing too short. Slightly longer grass shades the soil and protects the roots.

So yes, it’s definitely possible to make this lush again. The key is improving the soil first, then either reseeding or laying turf on a properly prepared base. If you’re happy to put in a bit of time, you can absolutely turn this into a soft, green space your kids and dog can enjoy.
