hello, I am wanting to freshen up/re-grout my shower. I have read that epoxy grout is best? Please can you let me know your thoughts
? Thank you!
Hi @rachwhit,
Just to start with, are you planning on removing and cutting out all of the existing grout, or are there just certain areas that are damaged or missing?
If you’re intending to remove all of it, then yes, replacing it with an epoxy grout is definitely an option. However, it’s worth knowing that cutting out the grout from an entire shower is a fairly considerable job. It’s time-consuming, messy, and needs to be done carefully to avoid damaging tiles or waterproofing. Because of that, most people choose to just remove and refill the damaged or missing sections using a standard cement-based grout instead.
Here's a helpful guide: How to remove grout from tiles.
Epoxy grout is typically considered more durable and more resistant to mould and staining than standard grout, which is why it’s often recommended for showers. That said, it is more difficult to work with. You have to clean it off the tile surface as you go. You can’t grout the whole shower and then come back later to wipe it down, as it will already have bonded to the tile and can be very difficult to remove. If this is your first time grouting, I’d suggest considering calling in a professional if you’re set on using epoxy, as it’s less forgiving than standard grout.
Can I ask what’s prompted you to re-grout? If it’s mainly missing or cracked sections, those can usually be patched quite easily. And if the grout is just looking dull or discoloured, grout rejuvenation pens can brighten it up significantly without the need for full removal. Personally I prefer the bottle over the pens for larger areas.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
