How tall does the cupboard need to be for an undermount rangehood?

I'm having installed an undermount rangehood and the ducting will go out through the wall (so out the back of the cupboard). I'm just looking for guidance as to how high the cupboard needs to be to accommodate the ducting going out the back of the cupboard at a 45 degree angle. So the rangehood itself is 278cm high and the ducting will be about 150mm wide. It's recommended, if going through the wall, that it be at a 45 degree angle rather than 90 degrees. Thoughts?

For an undermount rangehood that is 278 mm high with 150 mm ducting exiting through the back wall at roughly a 45-degree angle, you generally want a cupboard with an internal height of at least 350 to 400 mm to comfortably accommodate the unit and allow room for the angled duct connection. The extra space accounts for the rise created by the 45 degree bend and gives you clearance to properly secure the duct without crushing or restricting airflow.

At an absolute stretch, you might get away with an internal cupboard height of around 320 to 330 mm, but that would be very tight and leave minimal room for the 45 degree duct bend and proper clamping. Anything shorter than that risks crushing the duct, restricting airflow, or making installation extremely difficult, so it is generally safer to stay above 350 mm if possible.

Keep in mind that exact requirements can vary depending on the specific model and the type of 150 mm elbow used, so it is always best to check the installation manual or confirm with your installer before finalising cabinet dimensions.

Thanks JacobZ. That was about what I figured so that's good! Sounds like you are in the know so while we're here the unit itself is 290mm wide and the hole that gets cut is 265mm. They suggest a minimum of 35mm around the hole. So I'm thinking absolute minimum cupboard depth would need to be 300mm. Am I working that out correctly? Or would you suggest a bit more leeway around the font and back edges? Thanks.

Does it specify whether it needs 35mm on all sides?

I would think you'd need 35mm on all sides, which would mean the depth needs to be at least 335mm.

It all depends on what the installation manual says, but I'd say more room would be better to ensure there is sufficient material for your screws to bite into without splitting anything.

Sorry to be clear. Just re depth only, hole will be 265mm (front to back) and rangehood unit is a total of 290mm. Yes 35mm round all sides but cupboard width will have plenty of space.

What I meant is does it need 35mm both in front and behind the cut out?

I would assume you can't have 35mm at the front and no clearance at the back, so I'd assume you need 335mm of cabinet depth.

It would all depend on the screw placement though, so you'd need to check this in your manual.

Just out of curiosity can you please tell us what model of rangehood you are using, and can you please tell us if you are using a gas or electric cooktop. An electric cooktop will require a gap of 600mm, and a gas cooktop will need 700mm. Please refer to the manufacturer's recommended distance. These distances might affect the size of your wall cabinet.
