Hi Team,
Could you please help in advising me in building elevated garden build similar to attached image.
Please advise on wood to use as its for outdoor, measurements/cuts & screws, stain, etc.
Thanks in advance.
Rakesh.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @rakeshnampally. It's terrific to have you join us and many thanks for your question on creating a raised garden bed.
It sounds like you’re looking for a full step-by-step guide to build an elevated garden bed similar to your attached image. Our members would be more than happy to offer tips and advice on how to go about the construction. Here's quite a similar design, which could be adapted to suit your double-wide design: How to make a portable garden bed.
You might also want to consider that pre-fabricated raised garden beds are often reasonably priced and can sometimes end up being less costly and less time-consuming than building one from scratch. Something like the Saxon Wooden Raised Garden Bed would be a great budget-friendly option, or for a more premium version have a look at the Vegtrug 78 x 32.1 x 80cm Natural Wood Raised Slimline Herb Planter With 4 Pockets - Natural.
To give you the most useful advice, could you let us know what tools you have available, for example, a circular saw or drill driver, what size it will be, and what types of plants you intend to grow in the bed, including whether you’ll be growing any edibles? Once we know a bit more, we can provide some guidance on materials, finishes, and general construction tips.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Hi Mitchell,
Thanks for getting back, tools I have are impact driver & hammer drill, hand saw (trying to get some confidence before I can use other tools 😀).
Thinking of 1200mm x 600mm garden bed to grow edibiles like mint or other day-to-day plants.
Cheers
Hello @rakeshnampally
There will be times when you'll need to move your veggie garden to another location and I suggest building it just a tad smaller. I recommend a size of 700mm x 325mm x 322mm. This will make it much easier to move especially when the weather is rough. I've placed some general images below to give you an idea of how you can build the free standing garden bed. The measurements indicated are recommendations only, you can adjust the build to your needs. Please note that you'll need to add extra timber support should you decide to make it bigger.
The planter is made from 90 x 19mm 5.7m Merbau Joined Set Length Pre-Oiled Decking. The suggested screws to use are the Zenith 10G x 40mm Galvanised Countersunk Head Timber Screws - 18 Pack or similar. I recommend covering the inside of the planter box with builder's plastic to prevent the soil from constantly soaking the wood in moisture.
I also suggest having a look at our best advice - Top 10 most popular planter box projects.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi Eric, thanks for the details and pics.
Just want to check if bunnings would be able to cut the wood in the dimensions specified 700x325x322mm.
Could you please give bit more details / guidance in attaching L shaped corners (is it direct screws?) and basement.
Thanks
I'm sorry, but the shop saws do not do precision cuts, they only cut timber down for ease of transport. However, the good news is that you can use an ordinary hand saw to cut the timber pieces down to size. Yes, you can screw the pieces directly together, but it would be better if you can drill pilot holes to prevent the timber from splitting. There is nothing special involved with creating the "L" corners. They are basically two pieces joined together in an "L" shape.
In regards to the basement, are you referring to the floor of the box? If you are, they can be screwed directly to the supports (picture number 4), and you can add more screws from the side.
No problem 😀. Thanks Eric for the details, I'll give it a go and share details once I finish.
