How to repair hole in ceiling around light that wasn't installed properly?

(image brightened for clarity) This is in my bedroom. Years ago an electrician apparently botched the install on this light, after removing an older light fixture.

The light you can see here is hanging by the wires - it turns when changing the bulb and buzzes if moved too much. There are no screws in the fixture.

I'm concerned about the hole apparently being open to the ceiling. Can the hole just be filled in and the light screwed in or is there some electrical risk?

From what you’ve described, this really needs to be corrected by a licensed electrician. A light fitting should never be hanging by its wires, as it must be mechanically secured to the ceiling. Simply filling the hole and screwing the light into the plasterboard without proper support wouldn’t be safe or secure.

The buzzing you’re hearing is more concerning. That can indicate a loose connection, wiring issue, or movement at the terminals, which poses an electrical risk. Loose connections can overheat and potentially become a fire hazard. An electrician will be able to check the wiring, install the correct mounting support, and ensure the fitting is safely and securely fixed.

I’d recommend avoiding moving or adjusting the light further until it’s been inspected.
