How to mend wall after removing skirting/cornices?

Hi, I’m looking to mend my plaster wall after the removal of skirting and cornices. The aim is for a square set wall finish. It appears to be a brick wall underneath with a cement and plaster layer on top. The current gap left by the cornice removal is 5cm, with 3 cm in some parts of the wall. Question:

1)I’m assuming because of the large gap I’ll have to put in a metal bead angle?

2) can you suggest the type of products (plaster etc) I need for the project?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @bfo. It's a pleasure to have you join us and many thanks for your question on repairing a ceiling.

The first step will be to close up the gap with new sheeting rather than trying to fill a 30 to 50mm void with plaster alone. Because your ceiling was originally finished with cornice, the framing was not set up for a square set finish. Cornice usually hides the junction, so there often is not enough timber installed at the top of the wall to support new sheet edges. You will likely need to install additional timber framing along the top plate area to provide solid fixing points before you install any new sheet material.

Once suitable timber supports are in place, you can sheet the gap. If there is enough depth available, 10mm plasterboard such as Gyprock will generally be suitable. If space is tight, you may need to consider a thinner option such as 6mm Villaboard, depending on the depth you are trying to match. The goal is to bring the new almost flush with the existing wall surface.

After the sheeting is fixed, you can install an internal metal angle bead to form the square set edge. This will help create a clean, straight corner and provide durability. You can then apply a base coat compound over the joins and bead, followed by a topping coat to achieve a smooth finish ready for sanding and painting.

For the skirting removal areas, any damaged sections of cement render or plaster can be repaired using a premixed cement-based patching compound. Apply in layers if required and sand smooth once cured before repainting.

When carrying out this work, make sure to wear appropriate PPE including safety glasses, a dust mask or respirator, gloves and hearing protection if using power tools. Cutting and sanding plaster products can create fine dust, so adequate ventilation and respiratory protection are important.
