Hi Team, Due to a wheel on the rolling chair, some marks were left on the laminate (as shown in below image). What should I do to restore it? I’ve already replaced the chair that caused the issue.
Kind regards MM
Hi nagumuthu,
From what you have shown, and based on typical laminate construction, those marks are usually the result of the protective wear layer being worn through rather than just surface scuffing. Unfortunately, once the laminate’s top layer has been abraded away, there is no reliable way to restore it to its original finish. Unlike timber, laminate cannot be sanded and refinished because the decorative layer is very thin.
About the only practical short-term solution would be to use a chair mat to cover and protect the affected area and prevent further damage. It is good to hear you have already replaced the chair, as hard or damaged castors are a common cause of this issue.
If you were looking for a permanent fix, it would generally involve replacing the affected boards. With floating laminate flooring, this can be quite a large job, as boards typically need to be lifted back to the nearest wall to access and swap out the damaged pieces.
It is frustrating, but unfortunately, laminate does not offer many repair options once the wear layer has been compromised.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Hi Mitchell,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. In the short term, would any painting or recoating help to minimise or reduce the appearance of the wear and tear? I can try that, if that is feasible. Thanks
MM
Hello @nagumuthu
It's good to see you back with another project. I'm sorry but there are no paint products I can suggest that will be able to withstand daily wear tear from an office chair. I definitely would go with Mitchell's suggestion of using a chair mat to cover the damage.
Eric
Thanks @EricL and @MitchellMc The laminate planks measure approximately 190 mm in width and 1.15 m in length. Are there any samples available at Bunnings that I can take home to help match the correct pattern for the replacement?
You might like to check in at your local store to see if any samples are available @nagumuthu. There typically would be and they are located near the Special Order counter or in the flooring department. Unless you know exactly the product that is laid, you probably are not going to find an exact match, but hopefully it's close.
