How to protect new fence?

Hi all. We just had this new pine paling fence built. Looks abit ordinary which is fine at the moment - but just looking at the best way to 1) protect it and 2) make it look abit better.

Is there an oil or stain or paint that is recommended that can be used by itself, to perhaps protect it and also convert it to a more uniform timber (darker brown) look?

Does it have to be left for 2-3 months first?

And lastly, do they actually need protection or can they be left as is? (Granted it could look better). Thanks

Hi @foss,

Your new fence will almost certainly be H3 treated pine, which is designed for above ground external use. That means it is already treated to resist rot and insect attack, so technically it can be left as is from a structural durability point of view.

That said, applying a stain or protective coating will definitely help improve its appearance and can add extra protection from UV and weathering. If left untreated, pine palings will typically fade off to a grey colour over time due to sun exposure.

If you are looking to achieve a darker, more uniform brown finish, you could consider products such as Timber Protect 4L Brown Fence Stain or Cabot's 4L Merbau Water Based Deck And Exterior Timber Stain. The Cabot’s range in particular offers several brown tones, so you can choose a shade that suits your preference. Both options will colour the timber and provide added protection in one step.

In terms of timing, many people allow treated pine to weather for a few weeks to a couple of months before coating, especially if it feels damp from treatment. The key is ensuring the timber is dry before application so the stain can properly penetrate and adhere. You can check this by making sure the surface feels dry and no treatment residue is present.

Do keep in mind that stains will need periodic maintenance. Recoating might be required roughly every three years under normal conditions, though in harsher climates or full sun exposure, it could be needed more frequently.

So while protection is not strictly necessary for structural reasons, staining will definitely enhance the look and help maintain the fence over the long term.

Both products can generally be applied directly to the fence @foss, provided the timber is clean and dry.

With new treated pine, there is usually no major preparation required. However, it’s quite common for fresh palings to have some rough or splintery sections, especially if they are rough-sawn. If you are chasing a smoother, more refined finish, you could lightly sand those areas back first. This is purely for appearance and feel rather than performance.

Before staining, it’s also a good idea to give the fence a light clean to remove any dirt, dust or surface treatment residue, and allow it to dry fully. Once that’s done, you’re good to go.
