Best budget insulation under carpet and over decking?

Hi, I’ve installed sliding glass doors to enclose a pergola and turned it into a room. The floor is timber decking, and I currently have carpet tiles laid directly on top.

In winter the floor feels very cold, and I suspect cold air is coming up through the gaps between the deck boards.

What would you recommend installing on top of the decking, under the carpet tiles, to help insulate the floor and reduce the cold underfoot?

I’m looking for budget-friendly, DIY options, such as suitable types of underlay or insulation.

For a budget-friendly DIY option over your timber decking, you could try either:

• QEP 183 cm Comfort Carpet Underlay – 8 m Roll
• QEP 2 mm 11 m² Silver Laminate Floating Floor Underlay

Of the two, the carpet underlay will provide better insulating properties and make the floor feel warmer underfoot. The laminate underlay will help slightly, but is mainly for cushioning and moisture protection rather than insulation.

Either option is fairly easy to install yourself on top of the decking before laying your carpet tiles.
