What oil to use for Cyprus pine posts?

I have had some Cyprus pine posts installed in my garden. I love the brown colour and want to preserve this, I don’t want them to grey. What should i be using to maintain the colour? I have some Cabot’s aqua deck left over. Could I use this or would a different product be better?

Hi @lauravdh,

Thank you for your question about oil choice for your cypress pine posts.

Any exterior grade oil, such as decking oils, would be fine for this. As long as it states on the packaging that it is exterior grade and UV resistant, it will be fine.

If you're looking to maintain the colour, then you are going to want to use an oil that is labelled as natural or clear such as Cabots Aquadeck Natural Exterior Decking Oil or Timber Protect Natural Oil Based Decking Oil.

Before applying anything, make sure the posts are clean and dry and consider giving them a light sand with some 120-grit sandpaper if they are a bit rough to the touch. Apply the product evenly with a brush or roller, working along the grain, and follow the manufacturer’s coverage rates.

To keep them looking fresh, expect to recoat every one to two years depending on how much sun and weather the posts receive.

I have some of the Cabot Aquadeck left over from another project so it’s great that I can use that.

I take what you mean that I should sand it, but I like the rough texture of the posts and want to maintain that. I like the rustic look and don’t want them to be super smooth. Would this still be ok to oil on top of?

Yes, you can skip sanding them if you'd like, just make sure they are clean and dry prior to application as surface contaminants such as dirt can affect the absorption of the oil.

From what I can see, they look pretty much good to go, but if there are areas that have a bit more dirt than is reasonable, give them a scrub with some warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush.
