Hi Guys,
Woke up to find a hole in the hedge? Have been trimming the hedge regularly…kindly advise what can I do help grow the hole on the hedge…
Hi @susan9120,
If you woke up to a hole that wasn't previously there, I think there is a good chance it was caused by an animal, possibly birds or a possum.
To encourage the hole to close in, start by tidying up the damaged area. Use clean secateurs to prune any broken or torn branches back to a healthy stem. Clean cuts heal much better than ragged breaks and will encourage fresh growth.
You can also lightly trim the surrounding areas to encourage branching, which will overtime fill in the gap. When you tip prune the outer growth, the plant responds by producing side shoots, which can help fill the gap over time. Just avoid heavily trimming the damaged section until it has had a chance to regrow.
After pruning, support new growth by feeding the hedge with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Water it in well and continue to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Healthy, well-nourished plants recover faster and produce stronger new shoots.
If animals are still accessing the hedge, consider placing temporary mesh or light fencing around the area to prevent further damage while it recovers.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
