We have recently noticed several small cracks appearing in our sandstone retaining wall. In some areas, small sections have broken away from the main stones. Due to safety concerns, we repaired one larger stone with cement as it appeared at risk of falling. Please see the attached photos for your reference.
Hi @jeana,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
While your retaining wall doesn't appear to be leaning or shifting in a major way, some of those cracks, particularly image 1,2,3,6 and 7, where the stones appear to be slowly cleaving in two, are a bit concerning. This level of cracking is likely due to sustained pressure on the stones over time and it could be an early indication of a structural issue that needs to be addressed.
Unfortunately, due to the size and nature of the retaining wall, this is not something I could recommend a D.I.Y. repair for. My suggestion is to speak with an engineer, or a company that specializes in sandstone retaining walls for their assistance. They will be able to assess the retaining wall and make a determination on the severity of the issue then propose a solution moving forward.
Fingers crossed it is nothing, but for your safety and the safety of others, it is best that you speak with a professional for guidance.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
