Hi,
I attempted to fix two holes on my wall, firstly with spackle and then painting over it. My wall now looks more grey than the rest of the wall and I’m unsure how to fix it.
The paint colour is definitely correct.
Thanks!
Hi @horizonblue.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.
What makes you say the colour is definitely correct? Is it the exact same paint, just applied at different times? Or is it a colour matched paint?
I ask, because if it is the exact same paint that was used, the old paint on the wall could have faded slightly over time. This can make fresh paint look darker or greyer even if it’s technically the same colour. If this is the case, then painting the whole wall is the best option as it will ensure everything is uniform.
If the paint is fresh and the colour is definitely correct, the difference you are seeing is most likely due to the repaired area absorbing and reflecting paint differently to the rest of the wall. Spackle is very porous, and if it was not sealed or primed before painting, it can soak up the paint unevenly. This often makes the patched area appear duller or slightly grey compared to the surrounding surface, even though the colour itself is the same.
Another common cause is a sheen difference. Even if the tint is identical, variations in gloss level will affect how light reflects off the wall. The repaired section may look flatter than the original painted surface, which can make it appear darker or greyer.
The most effective solution is to lightly sand the patched areas using a fine sanding sponge, apply a primer, allow it to dry completely, and then repaint.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
