I have outdoor shed , I want to make the front wall timber to a door. Any advice? What type of hinge and how many can carry the weight of wide door? W 1700 H 1950
Thanks
Hi @Ajay1,
Unfortunately, it is not going to be as simple as slapping some hinges on your screen and hanging it.
This is because once you hang the gate, the weight of the latch side, which is opposite the hinges, is only being supported by the horizontal battens, which are not oriented in a way that is capable of supporting the weight, so it will sag and almost certainly drag on the ground.
To counteract this sagging, you would need to alter the screen to include a frame which transfers the weight laterally into the hinges. This is typically done by including horizontal bracing that runs from the top of the latch side, diagonally down towards the hinge side.
I've provided an explanation, as well as a video which summarises things nicely in the discussion How to fix sagging side gate?
In your situation, you would need to alter the framing to look something like this.
The material for the frame would need to be fairly robust, so if you are hoping to maintain the same style, you would have to use something like this 90 x 42mm Merbau.
Once the frame is in place, you would need to use some fairly robust hinges such as these Pinnacle 250mm Galvanised Scotch Tee Hinges. I would suggest you need 3 hinges attached to the horizontal framing members to support a gate of this size.
Depending on the weight, you may also need to add a gate castor on the latch side of the gate to help with smooth movement and to prevent sagging.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
