How to repair large holes in garage ceiling?

Hi there,

I'm replairing 2 holes in my garage ceiling. There's no existing support to attach the drywall and wanted to check if 75 x 25mm L/M H3 Treated Pine Sawn CCA is safe to use as support?

I'm more concerned about safety about potentially attracting termites. Also confirming there aren't any termites activity. I know it's treated but thought I'd check just in case.

Checking too if the entire wood (external and internal) are treated? If I cut the wood, would the fresh side also be considered treated or could that be a termite or other insect magnet and would need to apply some protection?

Thank you for sharing your question about what timber to use for drywall backing. I propose using 70 x 35mm Framing MGP10 H2 Blue Pine 2.4m as an alternative. It is made for framing and is H2F Blue Termite treated. If you wish to seal the cut edge you can use TWA Woodcare 300g Ecoseal Tanalised Timber Treatment. Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask, be sure to follow the spray safety precautions printed at the back of the container.

Instead of the blue pine, are there any "smaller" or metal affordable alternatives you'd recommend? Just checked the blue pine is only available through $50 standard delivery due to the parcel size.

If you are using the material as a form of support for the ceiling patch, I propose looking at the Metal Mate 20 x 12 x 1.4mm 3m Aluminium Unequal Angle - Silver. The only compromise of course is that you'll need to use self-tapping metal screws to anchor the parts together.

Unless you have a termite issue, then standard non-treated 70mm x 35mm framing pine will be fine to use and inexpensive. Cut 4 lengths a bit longer the the hole size after you square the openings up. Use 2 x hole and fix them in place with 25mm plasterboard screws. The repair infill boards can then be screwed to the timber.

Got it thanks for the suggestion. I did impulsively purchase 75 x 25mm L/M H3 Treated Pine Sawn CCA a few months ago. Would this still work or is the 70mm x 35mm framing pine still recommended. To recap, this is the garage ceiling.

If 70mm x 35mm framing pine is still recommended, would I also need apply a protection/sealant like TWA Woodcare 300g Ecoseal Tanalised Timber Treatment that was mentioned before? However, I do see that it's mentioned it's "[…] not suitable for application to, or protection of untreated timber.". Any other suggestions if required?

Yes, that is correct you can't use the Ecoseal on untreated timber in order to make it safe. The Ecoseal is meant as a protector to cut sections in existing treated timber. If you have existing 75x25 it will work just as well as the 70x35.

Goaing back to Nailbag's question, do you have existing termite issues? Is this why you prefer to use treated timber?

Great, thanks for letting me know. I'll use the 75 x 25mm L/M H3 Treated Pine Sawn CCA then and apply the protector to the cut sections.

Re: termite issues - confirming no termite issues. I previouly purchase the treated one because I thought that was the safe way to go to for the long term and still prevent any termite or insects issues, as per the description "Long term resistance to decay, insects and other wood destroying organisms."

If you want to make that timber stronger (25mm will have some flex) you could always join the length of timbers like a "T" Screw the flat piece to the upright piece and the flex will be gone.
