I have windows with safety spacers that limit opening them. What tool can I use to remove these and open the windows wider for cooling?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Sam456. It's great to have you join us and many thanks for your question on safety window governors.
Window opening restrictors or safety spacers are typically installed to comply with building regulations, particularly on upper-floor windows. Their purpose is to limit how far a window can open and reduce the risk of falls, especially for children. In many cases, they are a requirement under building codes when a window is above a certain height from the ground outside.
Because of this, removing or disabling them can create a serious safety risk and may also put the property out of compliance with local regulations. If the window is above ground level, those restrictors are usually there for a very important reason.
If you are finding the room gets too warm, you might consider alternative options such as improving cross ventilation, installing a ceiling fan, adding a window that is designed for greater airflow, or speaking with a licensed glazier or builder about compliant ventilation solutions. A professional can assess your specific window type and advise on safe and legal options.
Safety around elevated windows is extremely important, particularly in homes where children or visitors may be present.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
