How to fix loose concrete under fence post?

Hey all, I've got a piece of loose concrete near a metal fence post.

It only moves a little with force, it's still in there pretty good, but I can't move it fully back into position. I could probably remove it with some tools.

But what are the best options for repairing this? Not sure how deep the fence post goes in, I'm concerned taking this out could cause further problems to the fence, which seems fine otherwise.

Hi @Jarrod1,

This is one of those situations where it’s hard to know exactly what will happen until you remove the loose concrete. If you want to repair the area, the first step would be to carefully remove that section. Keep in mind that doing so could potentially destabilise the fence post, but ideally, once the loose concrete is out, patching the area will restore stability.

If the post is set deeply in concrete, and after removing the loose section the post remains solid and stable, you can simply rebuild the corner using a good-quality mortar. However, if the post becomes wobbly once the loose piece is removed, you’ll need to create a stronger connection: drill into the existing solid slab, insert and glue in some sections of reo bar with Ramset 300ml Chemset UltraFix Plus. Ensure the lengths of reo bar a short enough not t protrude from you finished level. You can then patch the area with mortar. This provides a mechanical connection that helps shore up the post and maintain stability.

You will need to remove the broken off concrete first before attempting either to glue it back (depends on the metal post) or to repair it properly.

As its a new post, maybe fixing it to the slab has caused the initial crack and that has expanded. Whichever way it still needs to be removed ad checked.

Its doable which is the good part, just may need to remove part of the handrail for a bit.

NOTE *** The concrete mate goes off fast, so minimal time making it smooth (yeah i still have small ripples) and I had underesttimated how much I would need. I was lucky I had a second 4Kg container handy :) Otherwise whoops…

At a guess, the installation of the aluminium screening post is the cause of the crack. As with both @MitchellMc and @Dave-1 I think it would be best to carefully pry that section out. I would expect the post goes or should go much deeper into the concrete porch and shouldn't be compromised by the missing piece.

I'm no expert when it comes to concreting. But I would think that the repair would involve drilling holes into the porch where the piece comes out from and inserting steel reinforcing rods that stick out. That way once the broken area is boxed up the new concrete will have a physical connection to the porch slab. Before pouring the concrete, apply Bondcrete to the face of the broken section which will help great for new to adhere to the old.
