How to fix leaking toilet when flushing?

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone can help me out, please.

Our toilet is spraying out water from the top of the fill valve very time we flush. Hopefully you can make it out in the photo. Would this be a washer issue or something else?

Hi Paul (@ptaylor),

It could possibly be a washer issue, but typically, a worn washer causes the cistern to leak slowly or overflow into the bowl rather than water squirting out the side of the fill valve. From your description and photo, water coming out the top or side of the inlet valve usually points to a crack or split in the plastic body of the valve itself.

In this case, the best solution is to replace the entire fill valve. For example, something like the Fluidmaster Bottom Entry Toilet Inlet Valve would be suitable. Replacing the valve should stop the leak and restore proper operation when flushing.

If you are not familiar with plumbing fittings, it's advisable to enlist the services of a plumber to replace the valve for you.

Thanks Mitchell. My immediate reaction was that it probably needed replacing, it's gotta be 40 years old by now, but I thought I'd ask in case there was an easier fix.
