Hi, i have old windows in the house. And the mechanism doesn’t work and need to open and close by pushing and pulling. It seems it has layers of paint where it opens from and not operating freely.
My question is how to remove this paint from all windows and repaint it. And is it possible to get this mechanism for open and close.
Hi @patel999,
Before you go to the trouble of stripping and repainting all the windows, it’s important to first determine whether the issue is actually the paint buildup or a failed mechanism. From what you’ve shown, there are multiple layers of paint in the track where the arm slides, and the pivot points on the hinge appear heavily over-painted and possibly corroded. That alone can definitely restrict movement. I’d recommend starting by carefully scraping the excess paint out of the track and around the sliding arm. You can also use a suitable paint stripper to soften thick buildup, especially around tight areas. Once the paint is removed, clean the hinges and pivot points with a degreaser to remove old residue and dirt, then apply a light lubricant to the pivot points and moving parts to see if that restores smooth operation.
After cleaning and lubricating, test the window to see if it opens and closes freely. If it still doesn’t operate properly, there’s a good chance the winder mechanism itself has failed. In that case, you could remove the mechanism entirely and manually check whether the window moves smoothly without resistance. If it binds or sticks, continue removing paint and freeing up the joints until it moves easily. Only once the window itself moves freely should you assess the winder. If the mechanism is faulty, you may be able to retrofit a more modern window winder, although finding an exact replacement for older hardware can be difficult.
Working around glass presents significant safety hazards, as glass can break unexpectedly and cause serious injuries. To reduce the risk of injury, always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses or goggles, long sleeves and long pants, and enclosed shoes.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Mitchell for guidance. I will try with paint stripper and see how i go with it.
Thank you.
