How to create a garden pond from drainpipe?

Hey everyone, the downpipe shown in the picture currently discharges rainwater onto the pavers in our backyard. No drain was ever installed.

My partner had the idea to buy a fibrestone bowl and create a small water feature that collects the water and then drains into the nearby garden bed via a hose.

However, the bowl doesn’t quite fit under the bottom of the downpipe, so we’re thinking about shortening it. How would we go about doing this? It’s riveted to the post and may also be glued. What’s the easiest way to shorten it so the bowl fits underneath?

That’s a creative idea, and a small water feature could definitely add a nice touch to the space.

However, when it comes to modifying roof drainage (such as shortening a downpipe or redirecting stormwater into a container), this does fall under plumbing and drainage regulations in many areas. Because roof water needs to be directed to an approved stormwater disposal point, altering the downpipe, even slightly, can sometimes create compliance or water management issues down the track.

It’s generally best to speak with a licensed plumber before making any changes to roof drainage. They can advise whether shortening it or redirecting the flow into a bowl and hose setup would be compliant and safe for your property. This would be the same, even if you just wanted to shorten the downpipe and not direct it into a container.

If you’re mainly looking to improve how the water is handled at ground level, another option could be exploring compliant drainage solutions that connect directly to the stormwater system or are designed specifically for garden dispersal.

It’s a great concept, but it would be worth getting the right advice to make sure everything remains safe and above board.
