Can someone please recommend a good bunnings product to use to fill the gap / cracks in this garden fence post?
I want to paint/seal it, but first I would like to fill that gap because it really bugs me.
Hi @stanley44,
You can use an exterior-grade timber filler like Polyfilla 450g Exterior Timber Filler to fill the gap before you paint or stain it. This flexible exterior timber filler is designed for cracks, holes, splits and other outdoor timber repairs, and once it’s dry, you can paint or stain over it to match the rest of your fence.
Because that split is fairly large, I’d also recommend running a couple of large screws through the front face and that half of the split directly into the back section of the post. That helps pull it together, reduces movement and prevents the crack from widening in future.
After securing it with screws, fill over the gap with the timber filler, sand smooth once it’s cured, then paint or stain and seal as planned.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Great thank you,
You don't think there's any risk of further splitting the post by screwing? It will need to be long screws, probably 70mm
Thanks
No, I don't think there is much of a risk of further splitting, @stanley44. I would pre-drill with a 5mm drill bit and use 75mm bugle screws. Mitchell
