My driveway has pavers, I am wanting to extend the driveway. How do I prepare the ground so that it is suitable to drive on?
Hi @Samc1234
Would you be able to share a few photos of the area you’re looking to extend into? That will help our members give more specific advice based on what you’re working with.
In general, to extend a paved driveway, you’ll need to excavate the area to about 150–200mm below the finished level. Then compact the natural ground thoroughly (we hire plate compactors for this). Next, lay 100–150mm of road base and compact it well. On top of that, add 25–30mm of bedding sand, screed it level, lay your pavers, and then compact them into place.
Proper excavation, road base, and compaction are key to creating a driveway that can handle vehicle traffic and lasts over time.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Mitchell, I will upload a picture shortly. If my area is 1.4m x 7.5m how many kg of raod base and sand is needed?
Hi @Samc1234,
It is easier to work with volume (cubic metres) rather than weight (kilograms), so I will calculate the volume required and then do a rough conversion based on this.
An area that is 1.4m x 7.5m is 10.5 m².
So, if you lay 100mm of road base, you'll need about 1.05m³, if you lay 150mm, you'll need about 1.58m³.
If you lay 25mm of bedding sand, you'll need about 0.26m³, if you lay 30mm, you'll need about 0.32m³.
If you purchase in bulk, which is often possible through your local store's Special Orders desk, you can use the volumetric amount, whereas if you are purchasing 20kg bags, we'll need to do a rough conversion to the the number of bags.
The volume of a single 20kg bag is roughly 0.01m³.
So, if you lay 100mm of road base, you'll need about 105 x 20kg bags, if you lay 150mm, you'll need about 158 x 20kg bags.
If you lay 25mm of bedding sand, you'll need about 26 x 20kg bags, if you lay 30 mm, you'll need about 30 x 20kg bags.
Keep in mind that if you purchase bags of material, as long as the bags remain undamaged, if they are excess to requirements, they can be returned.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you! Bulk option sounds better.
In addition would this be ok?

That smaller version is all you'll need, @Samc1234. Yes, it will fit the back of a standard SUV.
