How to change bathroom water from tank to mains?

My rain water tank has automatic change over switch. The tank water is used for the bathroom, laundry and garden. I need to change to mains water for bathroom and laundry keeping the rain water for the garden. How can I have this done? Wonder if it will be expensive? Please help me with my query. Thank you

Do you want this change permanent, or do you still want the convenience of the automatic changeover? Do you want the bathroom and laundry to be permanently on the mains or still have the ability to change over to the tank water?

The way I imagine it is that the bathroom and laundry will have the ability to switch over to the mains at a press of a switch. The switch will need to be manually turned off in order for the bathroom and laundry to go back to the automatic switching mode between tank water and mains. Otherwise, they will be permanently on mains unless the switch is turned off.

This is one way that it could possibly be done, I'm sure there are other scenarios that can be applied to your plumbing system. I don't recommend doing this as a D.I.Y project due to its possible complexity. I suggest engaging the services of a registered plumber to analyse your request and provide you with a written quote. I recommend getting at least two quotes for the project so that you can see what the going rate is. This would be the best way to get an idea of its cost.

Firstly, it's a job that legally only a licensed plumber can perform. Then how much they can convert from the current setup to the new will depend on how accessible all the pipes and connections there are. Pipes running through concrete slabs and non-cavity walls are just a couple of major obstacles. My son was able to have this done as the water in particular in the toilet was always leaving a stain around the bowl needing cleaning.

Time for the professionals to come in I would suggest. The change in your system to having it only mains supplied will probarlly need a plumber to switch some pipes around at the very least. I know that some houses have their rainwater feeding the toilet ect and switching it over to the mains would be out of the scope of diy as you need a plumber to do the work legally.

There may be a bypass valve already in the system (think there has to be) so it might be an idea to sit down and sketch up what you have and how things are fed from where.
