Whats happening ro my guava.
Looks like damaged feom inside
Hi @adkandel,
Were there any signs of damage on the skin of the guava fruit? Things like brown spots, lesions, or cuts?
It's hard to say with 100% certainty, but fruit fly damage is fairly common with guavas, and this certainly looks like it could be the case with yours.
Female fruit flies sting the fruit and lay eggs under the skin. The larvae then hatch and feed inside the fruit, which causes browning, soft patches and internal breakdown. From the outside the fruit can look fairly normal, but when you cut it open you will often see brown, mushy areas and sometimes small grubs.
To manage it, start by removing and disposing of any affected fruit straight away. Do not compost damaged fruit, as this can allow the life cycle to continue. Seal it in a bag and place it in the bin. Also collect any fallen fruit from the ground regularly.
To prevent further damage, you can use exclusion methods such as fruit fly netting over the tree or individual fruit protection bags placed over young fruit soon after it sets. Traps and baits designed for fruit fly, such as the The Buzz Citrus Gall Wasp And Fruit Fly Trap can also help reduce numbers. Apply them according to label directions and refresh them regularly during fruiting season.
Keeping the area under the tree clean and maintaining good tree health with regular watering and feeding will also help reduce stress and improve fruit quality.
