How to fill gap in joint of stone kitchen bench?

Hi,

There is a gap in the joint/seam of my stone kitchen bench which allows water/liquid to pass through and drip into the cupboard underneath. The material that was used previously to fill the gap has largely deteriorated and needs to be removed and replaced (refer below image).

Do you have any suggestions for how to remove the remnants of the old filler as well as what material/method to use to reseal the gap to look as neat as possible (for an amateur DIYer).

What I have determined from my limited internet research is that epoxy is generally preferred to silicone for this type of application. Is that correct?

Thank you for sharing your question about your benchtop. It appears that you have a stone benchtop or similar substrate. I'm sorry but the store does not carry a poly resin/ epoxy that is designed for stone benchtops. In this instance, I suggest engaging the services of a professional stone benchtop repair and restoration specialist. They will be able to repair the gap and produce a flat professional finish on the joint.

However, if you are not yet prepared to engage their services, I suggest temporarily repairing the gap by using Sika 300ml White NO1 Davco Neutral Cure N Silicone. My best advice is to clean the surface of the joint with detergent and water along with a small toothbrush to remove any oil or grease deposit. make sure to put a rag or tea towel underneath to catch any water dripping through. Once the gap is totally dry you can then apply silicone.

I suggest leaving the current filler in place as trying to remove it with a tool could cause damage to the corner finish of the benchtop.
