How to finish cut Kaboodle filler pieces?

Hi Team.

I have to put a filler piece of 42mm on either side of my dishwasher.  I have cut the Kaboodle filler pieces but am concerned there is now a raw edge.  Even though it will be glued onto an end panel, should I be putting a laminate strip on it or painting it?? Thanks in advance

Dealing with difficult to complete filler panels is a common problem you face with Kaboodle kitchen designs. I've installed multiple systems for both myself and clients and every time there are complications with fillers. They often results in an expectation for the average DIY'r to rip fine strips like a 6mm out of an expensive full length filler board which, refers the rest unusable. Plus it rarely accounts for the cosmetics finish like your squared off cut. When it comes to overhead filler panels the gap underneath is never taken into account which, I always fill. All of these types of fine cuts really need a table saw, which, most people don't have access to.

All that aside, I would not paint that edge as the mismatch in colour will make the edge more noticeable. Instead lightly hand sand the edge of the cut side to produce a smooth rounded edge as best you can. Then prime paint the raw cut to protect it from swelling should it get wet. Then use a white gap sealant along the right hand side to conceal the gap and the man-made cut.

From the photo I would also trim that 5mm off the bottom to keep it inline with the bottom of the door.

:) The eternal problem of somehow ending up with a gap. Your solution is pretty much how I would go as well. I would give it a couple of solid coats of paint just to seal it but as you wont see it it dosnt have to be perfectly smooth. I wouldnt worry about a laminate strip, it may actually create less tolerance if you do install a laminate strip.

I echo @EricL in saying it would be nice to see your finished kitchen and if you have taken photos (crossing fingers) maybe a project posted up here :) I can remember my first kitchen and how nervous I was, and years later when I posted it I was still nervous :) Now I am at a point of doing another kitchen and that nervousness is still there :)
