Hey all, we’re doing a Reno on our Laundry. Since we do quite a lot of DIY, we decided to to do it ourselves. Our laundry has an inbuilt closet. We want to confirm that the studs inside are non load bearing and can be removed. Here are our findings
Is there any more checks I can do to be 100% sure? Attaching some photos for reference
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @roystonrohan. It's fabulous to have you join us and many thanks for your question on structural support.
The only way to be 100% certain that the studs are not load-bearing would be to have a qualified builder or structural engineer assess the framing in person. While the checks you’ve done are a good start and the signs you’ve described can sometimes indicate the wall isn’t structural, it’s important to have someone experienced with roof framing look at the entire structure and load path before removing anything.
It’s also worth noting that just because the roof joists are not fully sitting on the structure below doesn’t necessarily mean the wall isn’t providing support. In some cases, walls can still help carry load even if the contact doesn’t appear obvious.
From what I'm seeing, I would say there is a significant chance that the wall is structural and being used to support the ceiling joists.
Given the risks involved with removing a structural element, it’s best to have a professional confirm things on site before proceeding. That way, you can move forward with the renovation confidently and safely.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
