Hi Bunnings Community,
I'm a newbie and looking for a simple, long-lasting fix for the gaps in my window frames and baseboards.
Is there anything I don't have to paint after applying?
Any help would be great.
Hi @waqarrasheed,
Depending on the level of finish you’re after, there are a couple of ways you could address those gaps.
For a neater finish, you could fill the gaps with a timber filler, sand it smooth once dry, and then repaint the area so everything blends in nicely.
If you’re looking for something simpler with less prep work, you could use a flexible, paintable gap filler such as Selleys 410g Paintable Sealant Paint Over White. This is designed for filling small gaps around trims and skirting boards and can move slightly with the house, which helps prevent cracking.
The only spot that might need a bit more attention is what appears in the first image, where the architrave looks like it’s pulling away from the wall. In that case, it would be best to first secure it back in place by nailing or screwing through the face of the trim into the timber framing behind it, and then filling the remaining gap with sealant or filler.
If you’re happy with the colour of the sealant, you can often leave it as is, but it's also paintable, so you have the option to paint later for a cleaner finish.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Hey Mitchell,
Thanks for the detailed response.
You mentioned the first picture fix, could you please suggest any screws to fix that part since I don't have a nailing gun? I would really appreciate it.
Best Regards,
Waqar
No need to use a nailgun, @waqarrasheed, a hammer will do the job. I'd suggest these Paslode 50 x 2.5mm 500g Bright Steel Bullet Head Nails. If you have very hard stud timber, you might need to pre-drill even for nails. For screws, I'd go with Zenith 8g x 50mm Zinc Plated Hinge Long Thread Timber Screws.
For pre-dilling, I'd recommend a 2.0mm for the nails and a 3.0mm for the screws.
